Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in 882 Days
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hard courts
A comeback the Russian player secured his first title for 882 days with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.
The Russian, a former number one, has experienced a difficult year, achieving just one match at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the American major.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in particular - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually parting ways with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.
Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has gradually progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a hard-fought three-set victory over opponent Moutet.
This marks his maiden championship since the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt from spring of the previous year.
Victory also indicates he has achieved 21 victories at 21 distinct tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a event with my both daughters at once, so to win a trophy is particularly special," commented world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I got when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six title deciders, featuring in Halle previously this season.
Medvedev's counter-punching approach and regular reactions on the tennis court had led commentators to doubt if his capacity to perform at the highest level was finished.
Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an enhanced serve.
He came back from a deficit in the initial set against the challenging opponent, securing 4 of the last five points to gain the advantage.
The pair exchanged breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his first tour title, took control to create a third set.
He saved 4 early-game break points in a tight final set before the Russian broke to fifteen to secure the win.
Appropriately, the winner clinched victory with a rally at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
