Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein Document Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that included little new information.
